Here are a couple articles from various news outlets detailing some of the effects of climate change. In sum:
- Warmer temperatures means more mosquitoes, which equals more mosquito-borne illnesses world-wide, says the World Health Organization.
- Changing precipitation patterns means variations in food output, which could lead to famine in certain parts of the world.
- Low-lying nations and communities will become inundated (some already have, such as the Marshall Islands, causing exodus, loss of arable land, and stress – see AP article).
And of course, that’s just a sample. It’s not the end of the world – it’s just the changing of it. Developed nations will better be able to absorb these changes economically and supply-wise. Poor nations, however, lacking available capital, will be even more hard-hit by disease, supply issues and the like.
Jesus cared about the poor and charges us repeatedly to care for and minister to them. (Mt. 25:31-46, Lk 4:18-19, etc.) Thus, we should help mitigate our role in climate change and help poor nations prepare. Proactively.
